Chapter Eight

Her back was aching like hell. It was bad enough on the bed-frame, but another night in that bloody cave was taking things too far. There had been no room to stretch out, no soft surfaces, and water had dripped down continuously. What was that Chinese thing? Water torture, that was it. And at least when Sue slept in the clearing she did not have to put up with Jeremy Fielding and his industrial strength snoring. Even the blokes on the beach had had enough of that. They had banished Jeremy to a distant nook. It was a shame the man could not be banished from the Grotto as well.

Sue had woken in a foul mood half an hour earlier, but she had kept to the cave while the rain continued to fall. It was little more than drizzle now. The morning sky was cloudy, though a few patches of blue were beginning to peep through.

What am I doing here? she wondered, looking out from the mouth of the cave. It was five days since Clive Monroe had been due back and only four since the death of Jane Ruddock. The whole reason for them being on the island had simply evaporated. They had long since stopped using the video cameras. The batteries were dead now in any case. There would be no documentary, so what was the point in carrying on? They must have been mad, setting everything up like this. Did they honestly think we’d just sit back and calmly film it all when everything was falling apart? Another, more disturbing thought struck her. Maybe they never intended us to film it. Maybe the documentary was just an excuse to get us all out here. She frowned. Why would anyone go to all that trouble? It’s not as if...

Chris Hudson was hurrying across the rocks towards her. Sue scowled. He had probably only left the cave to answer a call of nature. The lanky young man had been up a couple of times in the night. He could not move quietly to save his life.

‘I hope you washed your hands,’ she snapped.

He stared at her for a moment, but the comment was lost on him.

How that idiot got into Cambridge I’ll never know.

‘I’ve just been to see Bella,’ he said.

Oh, not dead then. ‘How is she?’

‘She’s, like, sitting up and eating. It looks as if she may be on the mend.’

‘Good for her.’

The Canadian sounded relieved, anyway. Stupid sod.

Sue had not been to see Isabel since the girl had fallen ill. It was rather callous, she knew, but there was no point exposing herself unnecessarily. God knows what kind of virus the young woman had contracted. Steve might be certain there’s no danger, but I’m damned if I’m going to take the risk. Isabel was a survivor. She would get through it somehow. Actually, Sue rather admired her. The woman knew how to handle herself, even if she was a bit stuck up. And anyway, there were plenty of people looking after her.
